This is the stuff we're made of.

Gold Vermeil
Our jewellery is plated using a technique called vermeil (pronounced ver-may). Vermeil refers to jewellery that is sterling silver plated with gold to a thickness of between 2 and 3 microns. This method produces a more resilient layer of gold that doesn’t wear away and ensures our jewellery is hypoallergenic.

The gold we use in our plate is 18 karat (it must be over 10 karats to count as vermeil). A karat is the measure of gold’s purity, with 24 karat gold being the purest you can get. This terminology comes from the measurement of a German gold coin called a mark about a thousand years ago. Just so you know.

925 Sterling Silver
We use solid 925 sterling silver to ensure great product quality. Unlike base metals, it won’t turn your ears green and is hypoallergenic to boot. In case you were wondering, 925 means 92.5% out of 100% pure silver – the remaining 7.5% is copper.

Our diamonds and gemstones

We are dedicated to creating a sustainable supply chain and ensure that all of our stones are ethically sourced. Our diamonds and gemstones are ethically sourced from suppliers who follow socially responsible practices and never source from conflict regions. Our diamonds are sustainably sourced in accordance with the Kimberley Process.

Quality over quantity:

We believe in creating jewellery that lasts. Our jewellery is hand-crafted in a Turkey atelier by our master craftsman. We reject fast fashion and make jewellery for keeps. That’s why we offer a three year guarantee on all of our jewellery.

Our makers

We personally visit our atelier in Turkey to ensure fair pay for all the craftsmen, and we know our makers personally. We also make all of our suppliers sign a code of conduct, to ensure that all of our craftsmen are fairly paid and use sustainable practices.

Our outer packaging is made from FSC-certified materials and is totally recyclable – if you’re one of those people that likes to keep your jewellery on a jewellery tree. Our inner foam lining is not recyclable (we’re working on that) but we encourage you to reuse it to keep your studs in. Any scrap foam produced is shredded and re-used in the production of another product.

Care Guide

Look after your Motley jewellery and it’ll look after you. Each Motley comes with a micro fibre cloth for removing grime.

Wear your silver with you everywhere to keep tarnish at bay (oil on your skin will protect it). Oxygen is silver’s enemy: keep your jewellery in its pouch or an airtight bag to keep the oxo-demon away.

Vermeil is an unfit, sweat-hating land-lover; make sure you take off your vermeil jewellery before jumping in the pool, shower, or strapping on your lycra.  Keep your pieces gold and gleaming by storing them in their pouch and remember not to buff too hard with your Motley polishing cloth.

Pearls are alkaline, so acids are their sworn enemy. Make sure you take off your pearls before washing up, getting in water, or working up a sweat. Your perfume, moisturizer or fake tan can damage your pearls so make sure you give them a wipe if any alien acids come their way.

Try and keep your earrings separate – our two-part Motley pouch is perfect to keep the bickering pair apart.
